A very good question!

There are probably 2 reasons:

• A voyage of self discovery. Some might cruelly refer to this as a mid life crisis (of course we don't) - putting ourselves to a test of not inconsiderable physical, mental and emotional hardship, in a competitive environment.

• To raise money for two very deserving causes.
